CHAMACOS Studies

About CHAMACOS

The Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS) is a longitudinal birth cohort study by the University of California, Berkley School of Public Health, that examines the effects of pesticides and other environmental exposures on children born to agricultural working families.
In 1999, the study enrolled pregnant women residing in the Salinas Valley, measured chemical exposures. and evaluated their children’s growth, health, and development every 1-2 years. The study expanded in 2010 to also include 9-year-old children.

Currently, over 800 children are involved in the study and will continue to be followed into adulthood. With new funding secured, the research concentrates on neurodevelopment and risk-taking behaviors as participants enter their late teens and early adulthood. The CHAMACOS Study has produced almost 150 publications, providing crucial insights into environmental exposures and health.
